The Number 1 question I get when I post a picture of my daughter is what curly hair products I use and how I manage her hair.
I thought it would be great to put this down after 4 years of managing curls for both my son (whose hair is now wavy) and daughter.
I have to say, as much as it looks great on Instagram, it is so hard to manage! More so because she absolutely hates us touching or brushing her hair. I get told I should cut it to make it easier on myself but I would rather hear her scream and tantrum than cut it. MashAllah, she has been blessed with beautiful hair and I can’t bring myself to cut it for now at least.
The Steps we normally take assuming you are washing the hair first are below along with my favorite curly hair products with links:

Wash & Condition
When we wash her hair (a few times a week), we use either this Shea Moisture Shampoo if we don’t have or OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Shampoo & Conditioner. I can see a difference from other products when washing my daughters hair because I can feel the softness while washing it even if it has knots.
Once I tried a Garnier Product and even though it left it soft, there was a tiny bit or coarseness for which I had to make up by using more styling serum/cream (shown below)
Brush & Detangle
The number 1 key thing is DON’T brush your daughter’s hair dry. Always wash it, and then brush it. I have tried at least 4-5 different brushes and combs but this EVA NYC De-Tangling Brush helped us immensely and hurt her the LEAST when he hair had knots in it. Sometimes if there are too many knots I will use one of the curl creams I have listed in the next step to soften the hair.

Set & Style
I have gone through so many curly hair products in the last few years and a few have stuck with me and really worked for my kids hair.
The Miracle oil is great when the hair is dry and seems to reduce the frizz. Both have an amazing smell and set the curls looking perfect. I sometimes love to call her Goldilocks because they are so bouncy MashAllah TabarakAllah!
I also sometimes use the Curl Enhancing Smoothie by Shea Moisture. Same as the OGX Coconut Curls Cream I like to use this on wet hair or have a little bit of water on hand if my daughter’s hair is too dry.
In my personal experience when I apply these on very dry hair without water it ends up looking very dry and frizzy and the curls don’t set in well.
Other Important Tips to Manage Curly Hair on a Daily Basis
Always make sure to brush and tie up your daughter’s hair before she sleeps at night. A few times I made the mistake of letting her sleep with her hair open. She would wake up with it looking wild, messy and knotted.
It was so hard to manage in the morning so I started to either plait it before bed or tie it up and it helped lots.
Use a Silk Pillow Case which can help reduce friction on your daughters hair which often causes damage, like spilt ends. This is one big help to avoid crazy morning hair.
Always wet the hair before brushing it. So even if I am using one of the curling hair products (like the creams/serums suggested above) I always use a little water.
The best way is to use a spray bottle. This helps get out the knots out easier. You can also spray this OGX Argan oil (it sometimes comes in a spray bottle) and gives the hair a nice look along with an amazing smell.
Here’s a video to see the stages I mentioned above and the difference it makes!
Hope these tips were helpful to manage your daughter’s soft curls. These curly hair products are priced the best at Target and they normally almost always have a deal on the OGX products (gift card upon getting 2 or 3 products).
